Our Mission

The Mission of the Butler County Historical Society, Home of the Kansas Oil Museum, is to preserve and interpret the history and culture of the people of Butler County and the Kansas oil industry.

This is accomplished by utilizing collections, exhibits, educational programs, special events, and research opportunities.

As an educational organization, we offer year-round programming and group tours to encourage the community interest, now expanding to include the Evolution of Energy STEM Wall.

The new interactive STEM wall is divided into sections known as Wall Stations addressing:

  • How is energy used? What were the first forms of energy?

  • How have Petroleum (Oil and Natural Gas), Electricity, and Nuclear Energy transformed the world?

  • How have Renewable Forms of Energy and Other Energy sources added to the energy sector?

  • How has the Distribution of Energy from the beginning to today changed (or remained the same) to create the current energy pool?

  •  Concepts are explored with hands on activities

What is STEM Education and why is it important?

Science * Technology * Engineering * Math

  • Develops talents in problem- solving, collaboration and innovation

  • Provides a base of specialized knowledge useful in many careers

  • Teaches critical thinking skills and increases self confidence

  • Shapes the future, drives exploration and builds economic prosperity

Through the new Interactive STEM Wall, the museum features traditional and renewable energy, encompassing the history of oil and the viable future of the petroleum industry. While the STEM Wall educational components are targeted to elementary students, visitors of all ages will benefit from experiencing the new Evolution of Energy permanent exhibit.
